HQ IDS seminar examines emerging challenges of cyber-enabled cognitive warfare

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) A two-day seminar on cyber-enabled cognitive warfare, focusing on the growing threats posed by the convergence of cyber operations, artificial intelligence (AI), information warfare and psychological manipulation, commenced here today under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS).
Organised by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS), the seminar seeks to examine the changing nature of the security environment and the challenges emerging from the increasing use of digital technologies to influence human perception, decision-making and behaviour, particularly in the context of India's evolving threat landscape.
The deliberations on the opening day focused on the emerging cyber-enabled cognitive battlefield, the nature and functioning of influence operations, and the actors, channels and narratives shaping the contemporary information environment.
Participants also examined the targeting of military personnel, veterans and their families through coordinated information campaigns and digital manipulation. Discussions highlighted how the convergence of cyber technologies, AI and information influence is creating new vulnerabilities that extend beyond conventional cyber threats.
The sessions underscored the need for a comprehensive understanding of cognitive warfare, recognising its technological, psychological, institutional and societal dimensions. The discussions also highlighted the importance of identifying emerging threats and strengthening preparedness against attempts to manipulate perceptions and undermine institutional trust.
The seminar has brought together senior military officers, government officials, strategic affairs experts, diplomats, academics, technology specialists and media representatives, providing a multidisciplinary platform to examine the security implications of cyber-enabled cognitive warfare.
The inaugural session was attended by Rear Admiral Sanjay Sachdeva, Director General, Defence Cyber Agency; Major General Ashok Kumar (Retd), Director General, CENJOWS; Navin Kumar Singh, National Cyber Security Coordinator; Vice Admiral A N Pramod, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff; and Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC).
