HRTC Nahan depot faces acute tyre shortage; over 15 routes suspended

Nahan, Oct 16 (UNI) The Nahan Depot of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) in Sirmaur district, once regarded as one of the corporation’s most profitable depots, is now grappling with a severe shortage of tyres, leaving buses off the roads, that has reportedly forced around 12 buses to remain idle for the past three days, disrupting public transport services and leading to the suspension of more than 15 routes.
The buses are being operated on approximately two dozen routes through clubbed operations. If the situation continues, passenger difficulties may increase in the coming days.
This is not the first instance of buses being stopped at the Nahan Depot. The depot has been grappling with persistent disruptions for the past few years.
Sometimes, a shortage of diesel hinders bus operations, and sometimes, buses remain parked in workshops due to the unavailability of spare parts.
The current situation is that approximately 10 to 15 buses are reported to be parked in workshops for repairs every day. Now, the tyre shortage has further exacerbated the transportation system's difficulties. Passengers who commute to schools, colleges, and offices are facing the most difficulties.
Route closures and the clubbing of buses are disrupting regular bus services in many areas. Passengers are facing long waits for buses, while there is a risk of overcrowding on available buses on some routes.
HRTC buses are the primary mode of transportation for the public in rural areas. Consequently, the disruption in bus operations is directly impacting people's daily lives.
Ironically, the state government had announced the development of the Nahan depot as an e-depot, and as part of this initiative, the depot received 25 buses. However, 17 of these buses were subsequently withdrawn and sent to other depots in the state.
Consequently, the Nahan depot's bus availability crisis resurfaced. Now, the tyre shortage has only added to the woes.
The tyre shortage at the Nahan depot has persisted for nearly a week. Despite this, the lack of a timely solution has affected bus operations.
If adequate tyres and necessary spare parts are not made available soon, restoring the closed routes could become a challenge. Passengers who have limited transportation options other than the HRTC will suffer the consequences.
Meanwhile, Nahan Depot Sub-Divisional Manager Ramdayal confirmed that 11 buses are stranded due to a tyre shortage. He stated that all routes will be restored as soon as tyres are available.
