MMU launches coordinated Friday sermon campaign after opposing Waqf Board’s uniform sermon proposal

Srinagar, Oct 16 (UNI) Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), an amalgam of religious scholars and representatives of different schools of thought and headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday launched its first coordinated sermon campaign across Kashmir, parts of Jammu region and Ladakh, choosing Imaan (faith) as its first common theme.
The coordinated sermon campaign began day after the MMU opposed the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board’s proposal to introduce uniform Friday sermons across mosques and shrines in the union Territory.
The initiative follows the September 15 MMU Ulema Conference, where religious scholars agreed to collectively address pressing religious and social issues through coordinated Friday sermons, district-level engagements and sustained community awareness programmes.
As part of the campaign, Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq delivered the Friday sermon at the historic shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani at Charar-e-Sharief, emphasising the need to safeguard faith and remain steadfast in religious principles amid contemporary challenges.
The Chrar-i-Sharief shrine, one of the most revered Muslim shrines in Jammu and Kashmir, is administered by the J&K Waqf Board, headed by Darakhshan Andrabi, a senior BJP leader.
Mirwaiz said Imaan was not merely a verbal declaration but the foundation of a believer’s life, reflected in character, conduct and dealings with others.
He stressed that faith must never be compromised for wealth, power, influence or personal gains.
“A believer may live in this world and pursue its legitimate opportunities, but must never make worldly interests the price of his faith,” he said.
Expressing concern over materialism, the misuse of social media, moral confusion and declining religious awareness among younger generations, Mirwaiz urged parents, teachers, Ulema and religious institutions to collectively protect and nurture the faith of children.
He said the Mimbar (pulpit) was an Amanah (trust) and must be used to strengthen faith, guide society and promote unity rather than division among different Masalik (sects)
Referring to what he described as a sustained assault on faith and religious institutions, Mirwaiz said remaining steadfast in Imaan and united as a community was essential to counter such challenges.
The campaign aims to strengthen religious awareness and foster collective engagement on issues confronting the community.
A major controversy erupted recently over the Waqf Board’s proposal to introduce common themes for Friday sermons across mosques and shrines. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and religious leaders criticised the initiative, viewing it as interference in Muslim religious affairs.
Omar described the move “an unacceptable attempt by the BJP to interfere in the religious affairs of Muslims”.
