Hyderabad cyber frauds: Three victims lose Rs 5.35 cr; CP warns against ‘digital arrest’ scams

Hyderabad, Oct 13 (UNI) Three cyber fraud cases reported in Hyderabad on Monday resulted in losses of Rs 5.35 crore, prompting City Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar to urge citizens to remain vigilant against digital arrest scams, fake trading apps and fraudulent messages.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sajjanar said a company accountant lost Rs 2.70 crore after opening a suspicious ZIP file and acting on fake WhatsApp messages impersonating the CEO.
In another case, a 72-year-old woman was cheated of RS 2.12 crore after fraudsters threatened her with false money laundering allegations and subjected her to a 20-day ‘digital arrest’. A doctor who had returned from abroad lost RS 52.51 lakh through a fake trading app promoted on Instagram.
The Commissioner clarified that ‘digital arrest’ has no legal basis and that genuine investigative agencies never demand money online.
He advised people not to open suspicious links or files, to verify claims made by unknown callers and to avoid investment schemes promising unrealistic returns.
He also urged families to support elderly members and businesses to monitor bank transaction alerts.
Under the ‘Jagrut Hyderabad–Surakshit Hyderabad’ campaign, police conducted 11,417 cybercrime awareness sessions and educated around 5.06 lakh people in one year.
Victims of cyber fraud should immediately call the national helpline 1930 or lodge a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in to improve the chances of recovering their money.
