Hyderabad school student invents low-cost weather receiver 'SummitSathi' for off-grid Himalayan hamlets

Hyderabad, Oct 22 (UNI) Aagam Jain, a 12th-grade student at Indus International School, Hyderabad, has designed and developed 'SummitSathi', a low-cost, off-grid satellite weather receiver engineered to fetch real-time cloud imagery directly from passing meteorological satellites without requiring internet or cellular connectivity.
The low-cost satellite weather receiver that brings cloud images directly from weather satellites to remote Himalayan villages without requiring internet or mobile connectivity.
The disaster-mitigation device is being deployed across 10 vulnerable villages in the Seraj valley of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, catering to an estimated population of over 1,000 residents across three receiving stations.
Built using accessible commercial components, each receiver unit costs approximately ₹68,000.
Three local operators have been trained to monitor the equipment, ensuring isolated mountain communities maintain frontline weather tracking capabilities even when severe weather damages local communication towers and power infrastructure.
The project team clarified that while the receiver is not an automated cloudburst forecast tool or a substitute for statutory India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletins, it functions as a critical supplementary information tool during extreme weather events.
Jain, who conceptualised the device following trips across mountain corridors vulnerable to flash floods, has filed an Indian patent application as the sole inventor.
The young innovator presented his technical findings at the international European Conference on Remote Sensing (ECRS 2026).
Apart from his work on disaster resilience, Jain has pursued independent astrophysics research, developing custom software to examine around 595 suspected exoplanets. He has also compiled a ground-level dataset on urban light pollution by mapping night-sky brightness across 25 locations in Hyderabad over a two-year period.
Through his community outreach initiative 'Summit Stargazer', he has distributed his self-published astrophotography book, A Window to the Universe, to over 350 students. Outside academics, he captains his school's 170-member sports team and competes nationally in sprinting and hammer throw.
