Hylo Open: Sindhu, Lakshya advance; Prannoy crashes out

New Delhi, Oct 29 (UNI): PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen began their BWF Hylo Open campaigns with victories on Wednesday, joining several other Indian shuttlers in the second round of the Super 500 tournament in Saarbrucken. However, HS Prannoy failed to progress after losing to France’s sixth seed Toma Junior Popov in straight games.
Second seed Sindhu made a comfortable start in the women’s singles draw, defeating UAE’s Prakriti Bharath 21-10, 21-10 in just 28 minutes. Coming off a runner-up finish at last week’s French Open, the Indian controlled the contest from the outset and never allowed her opponent to settle.
Seventh seed Lakshya had to work harder to secure his place in the next round. The Indian lost the opening game 16-21 against Finland’s Joakim Oldorff but responded strongly, taking the next two games 21-9, 21-13 to complete the comeback victory in just over an hour.
Kiran George also advanced in men’s singles, beating Malaysia’s Cheam June Wei 21-18, 21-17 in straight games.
Prannoy, however, could not make the most of his opportunity against Popov. The Indian narrowly lost the opening game 21-23 before going down 16-21 in the second to bow out of the tournament.
Tharun Mannepalli and Sankar Subramanian also suffered first-round exits, losing to Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen and Finland’s Kalle Koljonen, respectively. Ayush Shetty, meanwhile, withdrew from the tournament before it began due to an injury sustained at last week’s French Open.
In women’s singles, sixth seed Unnati Hooda recovered from a game down to defeat Czechia’s Tereza Svabikova 17-21, 21-12, 21-11. After losing the opening game, Hooda found her rhythm and dominated the next two to seal the match.
Isharani Baruah also progressed, overcoming Germany’s Miranda Wilson 21-19, 21-9. Anmol Kharb had a closer contest against Sri Lanka’s Ranithma Liyanage but held on to win 21-18, 22-20, wrapping up the match in two games.
Malvika Bansod came out on top in an all-Indian clash against Devika Sihag. Bansod dropped the first game 18-21 but bounced back emphatically, winning the next two 21-10, 21-14 to move into the second round.
However, it was the end of the campaign for Ashmita Chaliha and Aakarshi Kashyap. Chaliha took the opening game against Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova but lost the next two 12-21, 8-21 to go down 18-21, 21-12, 21-8. Kashyap was beaten 21-12, 21-18 by Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova.UNI TB AAB
