Mumbai Indians part ways with Malinga, Mhambrey and Hopkinson

New Delhi, Oct 29 (UNI) Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have made further changes to their coaching staff, parting ways with bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Parash Mhambrey, along with fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, as the franchise reshapes its support team ahead of IPL 2027.
The latest exits come days after Mahela Jayawardene’s departure as head coach. Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has since been appointed to take charge of the five-time IPL champions.
Malinga, one of Mumbai Indians’ most recognisable figures, had been associated with the franchise as a player before returning in a coaching role. MI paid tribute to his contribution to the team over the years.
“Lasith Malinga has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians family and one of the most iconic figures in the franchise’s history,” the franchise said in a statement. “From spearheading MI’s bowling attack and playing a defining role in four IPL title triumphs and the 2011 Champions League T20 victory, to returning as a mentor and coach, Lasith’s journey with MI has been truly special. His passion, competitive spirit and commitment to the team have inspired generations of players. His legacy will forever remain an important part of Mumbai Indians.”
Mhambrey’s association with Mumbai Indians spans several seasons. He was part of the franchise’s support staff in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and returned for a longer stint from 2010 to 2017. During that period, Mumbai won their maiden IPL title and the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013.
He rejoined the franchise in 2024 after being part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning coaching staff. Mhambrey served as Mumbai’s bowling coach for the last two IPL seasons and also held the same position with MI Emirates.
“Paras Mhambrey has shared a long and valued association with Mumbai Indians, first from 2010 to 2017 and subsequently returning in 2024. Across both spells, Paras has brought immense experience, dedication and a deep understanding of the MI culture. His contribution to developing and nurturing the team’s bowling talent, along with the relationships he has built over the years, has been greatly appreciated,” the MI statement said.
Hopkinson joined Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2025 season, replacing James Pamment as fielding coach. Before moving to the IPL franchise, he served as the England’s fielding coach from 2018 to 2024 and was part of the coaching setup during the country’s 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup triumphs.
The changes mark a significant reshuffle in Mumbai Indians’ coaching setup as the franchise prepares for the next IPL season under Pollard’s leadership.UNI TB AAB
