IIM Mumbai to conduct comprehensive study on Pune’s traffic congestion

Pune, Oct 15 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) has agreed to conduct a comprehensive study of traffic management and transportation infrastructure in Pune and its metropolitan region following an initiative by union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol.
A preliminary meeting involving IIM Mumbai experts and officials from various departments was held in Pune on Thursday to discuss the scope of the study and identify long-term solutions to the city’s growing traffic problems.
Mohol had written to IIM Mumbai Director Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari on September 28, requesting an integrated study of the entire metropolitan region rather than examining individual transportation projects in isolation.
The institute has responded positively to the proposal.
Senior officials from the police, Pune Municipal Corporation, MahaMetro, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Regional Transport Office (RTO), Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) and Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) attended the meeting.
According to the minister, Pune’s metropolitan population is estimated at around one crore and is projected to reach two crore over the next three decades.
The number of registered vehicles has increased from 52 lakh in 2018 to 81 lakh in 2026, with more than 1,300 vehicles being added daily.
The proposed study will examine major roads, congestion hotspots, traffic signal systems, public transport, the metro network and the proposed ring road. It will also assess opportunities to improve traffic management, coordinate transport services and make better use of existing infrastructure.
Mohol said the study would help identify gaps in the existing transportation system and recommend scientific, long-term solutions to address the city's growing mobility challenges.
He stressed the need for coordination among government agencies to make commuting safer, smoother and more efficient for residents.
