IIT Bombay student’s death sparks protests; Mid-Semester exams put on hold

Mumbai, Sep 19 (UNI) The death of a second-year B.Tech student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has triggered concern and protests on the campus, with student activist Abhijit Deepke questioning the government’s response to the growing distress among students.
In a post on social media, Deepke alleged that students were taking extreme steps not only in remote tribal areas but also in major cities such as Mumbai.
He questioned whether the government would now give priority to students’ lives and asked how many more students would have to lose their lives before effective measures were taken.
The incident also prompted IIT Bombay to issue a clarification regarding the circumstances preceding the student’s death.
According to the institute, the student was pursuing a B.Tech in Energy Science and Engineering and was in his second year. The institute said the student had been found using a mobile phone during an examination. He had allegedly uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT and was attempting to obtain answers.
IIT Bombay clarified that no formal disciplinary action had been initiated against him following the incident. According to the institute, the department head and faculty members associated with the examination spoke to the student after the incident.
They counselled him and informed him that the episode would not have an adverse impact on his career.
The student subsequently returned to his hostel room, where he was later found dead on Friday evening.
The incident led to protests by students on the IIT Bombay campus.
More than 400 students reportedly participated in the demonstration and raised concerns over facilities and support systems available to students.
They also demanded that the administration take steps to improve the overall student experience and address their concerns.
Following the protests, the ongoing Mid-Semester examinations were postponed.
IIT Bombay expressed grief over the student’s death and said it was deeply saddened by the incident.
The death has once again brought attention to concerns surrounding student well-being, academic pressure and the need for effective support mechanisms in higher educational institutions.
