India-Africa agricultural partnership should move beyond seed trade: Telangana Governor

Hyderabad, Sept 17 (UNI) Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Thursday called for taking India-Africa agricultural cooperation to a new level through collaboration in seed technology, research, investment and entrepreneurship.
Addressing the valedictory session of the 2nd India-Africa Seed Summit-2026 here, Shukla said quality seeds were the foundation for food security, higher farm incomes, rural development and self-reliance.
He said India should share its expertise in seed research, breeding, hybrid technology, production, processing and quality control with African countries.
The Governor called for cooperation to move beyond seed exports by developing local seed production, testing and processing capacities in African countries, which, he said, would create long-term benefits for farmers, youth and entrepreneurs.
Shukla said Telangana's capabilities in seed research, production, testing and certification could be linked with India-Africa agricultural cooperation.
He said the expertise of ICRISAT at Patancheru, along with Hyderabad's research ecosystem, agricultural technology and skilled human resources, could further strengthen the partnership.
"The ultimate objective must be the welfare of farmers," the Governor said, stressing that agricultural cooperation should also cover soil health, irrigation, nutrition, credit, insurance, storage and markets.
He called for greater research and technology exchange to promote climate-resilient agriculture and empower small farmers.
Shukla expressed hope that the Hyderabad summit would serve as a platform for a long-term India-Africa partnership based on knowledge, technology, investment, local production and farmers' welfare.
ICRISAT Director General Dr Himanshu Pathak, Telangana Agriculture Production Commissioner and Secretary Surendra Mohan, AFSTA Secretary-General Dr Yacouba Diallo, ICFA Executive Director and CEO Sanjay Sethi, representatives from African countries, government officials, scientists, seed industry representatives and entrepreneurs attended the programme.
