India’s ocean satellites strengthen monitoring of El Nino, algal blooms

Kochi, Nov 5 (UNI) India’s advanced ocean-observation satellites are playing a crucial role in monitoring marine ecosystems, tracking El Nino-related changes, detecting algal blooms and assessing ocean productivity, Dr N Aparna, Deputy Director of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has said.
Delivering the keynote address at the international TREVOR SAFARI symposium, she highlighted the applications of Ocean Colour Monitor-3 (OCM-3), onboard EOS-06 (Oceansat-3), in identifying Potential Fishing Zones (PFZs) and issuing scientifically based advisories to the fishing community.
OCM-3 observations enable scientists to monitor variations in chlorophyll-a concentration, a key indicator of ocean productivity, and assess changes in marine conditions, she said.
The satellite data, combined with ocean-surface wind measurements obtained through the scatterometer onboard EOS-06, are also being used to study variations in ocean productivity associated with El Nino.
The integrated observations would help scientists gain a better understanding of the relationship between changing wind patterns, ocean upwelling, nutrient availability and phytoplankton abundance, Dr Aparna said.
Highlighting the effectiveness of satellite-based fishing advisories, she said fish catches in Potential Fishing Zones identified through the application were found to be 1.5 to four times higher than those in areas outside the recommended zones.
The findings underline the growing importance of satellite-based ocean observation in understanding climate-related changes, monitoring marine ecosystems and improving fishing efficiency, she added.
