US State Dept approves potential sale of USD$2.68bn worth of air defence equipment to Ukraine amid depleting stocks

Washington/Kyiv, Sep 19 (UNI) The US State Department has approved the potential sale of USD$2.68 billion worth of air-defence equipment and related services to Ukraine, as Kyiv continues facing intensified Russian attacks and amid depleting munition stocks.
In a Congressional notification issued on Friday, the State Department said it had approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine covering air-defence development upgrades, equipment and services. The proposed deal still requires Congressional review.
Ukraine has requested S-300 clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles and range-extended, laser-guided air-defence rocket systems, along with launchers, mobile launch-system modification kits, counter-drone radars, trailers and other equipment and spare parts.
The State Department said that if the purchase goes through, Ukraine would finance it using a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing appropriated during former President Joe Biden's administration. The Foreign Military Financing funds would be counted as a US contribution to the US-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund through a 1:1 reimbursement, according to the notification.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on European countries to shoulder more of the cost of supporting Ukraine. Earlier this month, he said he would ask European governments to repay Washington for the military aid provided to Kyiv during the Biden administration.
The latest arms decision came on the same day Trump signed legislation imposing additional sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine.
The measure, named after the late GOP Senator Lindsey Graham, targets Russia's energy and defence sectors and includes sanctions against President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, criticised the sanctions on Telegram and said Moscow's response should include "military deterrence", without giving further details. He said Russia would respond to what he described as the law's "Russophobic atrocities".
