Trump bars CNN, MS NOW, Politico from White House after accusing them of peddling ‘FAKE NEWS’

Washington, Sep 19 (UNI) US President Donald Trump barred news platforms such as CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House “effective immediately”, escalating his long-running feud with news organisations whose coverage he has been critical of.
On Friday, Trump announced the move in a post on Truth Social, accusing the three outlets of publishing “FAKE NEWS” and “FICTION and LIES” about him, his administration and the US, and further threatened to impose similar restrictions on other media outlets.
The White House declined to comment beyond Trump’s post.
CNN said it stood behind its White House reporting and argued that journalists have a constitutional right to cover the administration without government interference.
“Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right,” the network said.
Politico said it would continue its investigative reporting on the Trump administration and future administrations and would “vigorously defend” its First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict its coverage.
MS NOW and the White House Correspondents’ Association did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The scope and immediate effect of the order were not initially clear. CNN said its journalists were still working from the White House shortly after Trump’s announcement.
The move is likely to face legal challenges, as DC Circuit previously ruled that once the White House opens its general press facilities to journalists, it cannot proceed to arbitrarily deny access to the press and can only impose restrictions on press credentials if they are accompanied by due process.
A separate case over White House access by the Associated Press has also raised questions about the administration’s authority to restrict journalists from more tightly controlled spaces such as the Oval Office and Air Force One. The broader dispute remains unresolved.
Trump has previously clashed with news organisations over access.
In 2018, the White House revoked CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s press credential after a confrontation with the president, but a federal judge ordered the credential restored.
The Trump administration also restricted access for the AP last year after the platform continued to use the term “Gulf of Mexico” rather than Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America”, resulting in a First Amendment case.
The White House also took control of selecting members of the presidential press pool last year, removing that role from the White House Correspondents’ Association.
Other parts of the administration have faced similar legal challenges over media access. The Pentagon imposed restrictions on journalists, but a federal judge struck down parts of its credentialing policy this year.
A revised policy was also blocked, although that decision has been stayed pending appeal. The Treasury Department last month also denied credentials to some journalists seeking to cover the G20 meeting in North Carolina.
Press freedom groups have criticised Trump’s latest move.
Seth Stern, advocacy director at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, called banning news organisations because of their coverage “a blatant violation of the First Amendment” and urged media outlets to challenge the restrictions.
Jameel Jaffer, executive director of Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute, compared the move with other efforts by the Trump administration to pressure institutions it has criticised.
“With so many courts having ruled against him on exactly this point, you’d think President Trump would have learned this lesson by now,” Jaffer said.
The National Press Club also condemned the announcement. Its president, Mark Schoeff Jr., said “Every American should understand what is at stake. If implemented, this ban would mark an unprecedented assault on press freedom.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also criticised Trump’s decision, writing on X “Donald Trump just did what dictators throughout history have done. @realDonaldTrump - this is a democracy. You will not be able to manipulate the news or hide the truth.”
