ITBP, NDMA to bring 200 experts for disaster management symposium in Chandigarh

Panchkula, Sep 17 (UNI) More than 200 disaster-management experts, scientists, security personnel and administrators from across India will gather in Chandigarh for a two-day symposium beginning September 17 to examine preparedness for earthquakes, cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, avalanches and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), through its National Institute of Training for Search Rescue & Disaster Response (NITSRDR), is organising the September 17-18 Integrated Symposium on Disaster Management jointly with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at MGSIPA, Chandigarh, according to a press release issued here today.
The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of the range of natural hazards faced by Himalayan and other disaster-prone regions, with discussions expected to centre on how warnings can be converted into quicker action on the ground.
Six technical sessions will examine early warning and forecasting, last-mile dissemination of alerts, high-altitude search and rescue, the Incident Response System and coordination among agencies during major disasters.
Representatives of seven northern States and union Territories will participate, along with experts from national scientific and technical institutions, the Armed Forces, the Central Armed Police Forces, disaster-response agencies, and State and UT administrations.
The symposium, themed “Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction, Preparedness and Response through Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration,” will bring operational agencies and technical experts together on a common platform to discuss gaps in disaster preparedness and response.
Particular attention will be given to challenges posed by earthquakes, cloudbursts and flash floods, landslides, avalanches and GLOFs — hazards that can require rapid evacuation, specialised rescue capability and coordination between multiple agencies.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria will be the chief guest at the inaugural session on September 17.
The ITBP has a significant operational presence in high-altitude Himalayan areas, while its NITSRDR specialises in training for search, rescue and disaster response.UNI KK AAB
