Janardhana Reddy attacks Karnataka govt over Vande Mataram order

Koppal, Sept 19 (UNI) BJP MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy on Saturday hit out at the Karnataka government over its directive limiting the rendition of Vande Mataram to its first two stanzas at state government functions, questioning the move to initiate action against officials who sing the full version.
Reacting to Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi's warning that action would be taken against officials violating the government order, Reddy said there was nothing wrong in spending three minutes to pay respect to the motherland.
The Karnataka government had directed that only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram be sung at state government programmes, with an exception for functions attended by the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister or Governor.
Reddy alleged that the government was threatening officials for singing the complete national song while, according to him, failing to take similar action in other controversial instances.
He accused the Congress of using the issue for vote-bank politics and questioned the rationale behind restricting the rendition when Vande Mataram was a symbol of the freedom movement.
"Isn't it possible to dedicate three minutes to the country?" Reddy asked, arguing that singing the complete song was an expression of respect for the motherland and not a matter of personal gain.
The BJP leader also criticised KPCC president B K Hariprasad over his reported stand favouring the two-stanza rendition and alleged that the Congress of today was different from the Congress of the freedom struggle.
The controversy has intensified after the State government's order triggered opposition from BJP leaders, with the issue also reaching the Karnataka High Court.
The BJP has demanded that the full version be sung at government functions, while the Congress government has defended its directive as a matter of protocol and uniformity.
