Tirupati: Eminent surgical oncologist offers specialised cancer care at SVIMS under Srivari Vaidya Seva

Tirupati, Sep 19 (UNI) Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) is providing specialised cancer care to patients by bringing eminent medical experts from India and abroad under the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams' (TTD) Srivari Vaidya Seva initiative.
As part of the programme, eminent Surgical Oncologist Dr Harishankar BGV rendered specialised services in the Department of Surgical Oncology at SVIMS from September 17 to 19.
He evaluated patients, offered expert opinions and provided guidance on treatment planning and management of various cancers.
Dr Harishankar is Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at Panimalar Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Chennai, and Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Dr Mehta's Multispeciality Hospital, Chennai.
Speaking about his participation, Dr Harishankar said it was an honour to serve devotees of Lord Venkateswara, particularly poor and needy patients, through the initiative.
He highlighted the growing role of 'endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques' in cancer surgery, while noting that the choice of surgical approach depends on the type, location and stage of cancer and the patient's overall clinical condition.
He said minimally invasive procedures, where clinically appropriate, could offer advantages including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. However, complete and safe cancer treatment remained the primary objective and the surgical approach had to be individualised by an experienced multidisciplinary team.
SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor Dr Gudaru Jagadish said the primary objective of Srivari Vaidya Seva was to make the knowledge and specialised skills of leading medical experts accessible to poor and underprivileged patients.
"No patient should be deprived of advanced medical care merely because of financial limitations," he said, adding that the participation of eminent specialists also provided an academic opportunity for SVIMS faculty, residents and postgraduate students to learn advanced techniques and specialised skills.
He stated the initiative combined patient care, medical education and transfer of expertise.
Dr Jagadish appealed to eminent specialists in India and NRI doctors working abroad to voluntarily participate in Srivari Vaidya Seva and dedicate part of their time and expertise to serving needy patients.
He invited specialists from various disciplines including cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, medical and surgical oncology, orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology, endocrinology, paediatrics, critical care, anaesthesiology and radiology to associate with the initiative.
SVIMS, with the support of TTD, plans to further expand Srivari Vaidya Seva as a platform for specialised patient care, medical education, advanced clinical skills and knowledge transfer.
Dr Jagadish said the programme would continue in the spirit of "People's Health – Srivari Seva", with the objective of ensuring that financial limitations do not become a barrier to access to specialised medical care.
