Jharkhand: Police use lathi-charge during HEC land eviction

Ranchi, Sep 16 (UNI) Tension prevailed near Satellite Chowk of this Jharkhand district on Wednesday as police used lathi-charge after people opposing the removal of alleged encroachments from HEC land pelted stones at the police team.
The clash broke out when residents resisted the eviction drive being carried out by the district administration and HEC authorities. Several protesters and police personnel were injured in the incident, while more than six people were detained.
A heavy police contingent was deployed at the site since morning as the administration appealed to residents to cooperate with the eviction drive. However, several protesters sat in front of earthmovers and some climbed onto the machines, following which the situation turned tense.
Hatia Deputy Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar said the team carrying out the eviction was attacked and several police personnel were injured in stone-pelting. He said a mild lathi-charge was used to bring the situation under control.
Residents claimed they had been living in the area for several decades and opposed the demolition of their homes without an alternative arrangement. They demanded rehabilitation before any further eviction action.
The residents also alleged that the administration had earlier assured them that the settlement would not be demolished, but later resumed the eviction drive.
Officials said the action was being carried out on the orders of the district administration as the land belonged to HEC. They said structures falling within the category of encroachment would be removed in accordance with the order.
The eviction campaign is expected to continue.
