Timely vascular care can save limbs of diabetic patients: Experts

Bengaluru, Nov 4 (UNI) Early diagnosis, timely specialist referral and restoration of blood circulation are crucial to preventing diabetic foot complications from progressing to infections and amputations, vascular specialists said at a clinical meet here on Wednesday.
Dr Apurva Srivastava, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon and Director of the Non-Invasive Vascular Lab at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, stressed that delayed diagnosis, nerve damage and poor blood circulation often complicate diabetic foot conditions, making early assessment and intervention essential to saving limbs.
He was speaking at a clinical dinner meet on 'Advancing Wound Care and Tissue Regeneration', organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), South Delhi Branch, under the Save the Limb India initiative, in collaboration with PACE and NoWound by Medvital.
"Diabetic foot complications require early assessment, particularly when nerve damage masks pain or poor circulation affects wound healing. Timely referral helps identify the underlying problem and determine whether vascular intervention is needed. Addressing these factors early can support treatment and help preserve the limb," Srivastava said.
Diabetes-related nerve damage can reduce sensation in the feet, leaving patients unaware of cuts, blisters and ulcers, while poor circulation delays healing and increases the risk of infection and tissue damage.
Depending on the patient's condition, vascular specialists may consider endovascular procedures or surgical bypass to restore blood flow. Treatment may also involve pressure offloading, infection control and specialised wound care.
IMA South Delhi Branch President Dr M K Mudgal said early diagnosis, regular foot assessments and timely vascular intervention were critical to preventing amputations.
"Early diagnosis and timely specialist referral are critical to preventing diabetic foot amputations. Regular foot assessments, prompt attention to wounds and timely vascular intervention can help prevent complications and preserve limbs. A coordinated approach involving vascular surgeons, diabetologists and wound-care specialists is equally important for effective treatment," he said.
The meet also discussed advances in wound-care technologies, including liquid bandages, advanced negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) and extracellular matrix-based technologies.
Dr Varun Gupta, CEO of Medvital, highlighted the role of emerging technologies in improving wound management and tissue regeneration.
The multidisciplinary approach involving vascular surgeons, diabetologists and wound-care specialists was emphasised as essential for managing complex diabetic foot conditions and reducing the risk of limb loss.
Experts advised people living with diabetes to undergo regular foot examinations and seek prompt medical attention for cuts, blisters, ulcers, skin discolouration or wounds that do not heal.
