Kakinada: Bringing Pressure on Courts Unacceptable: BJP Leaders

Kakinada, Oct 10 (UNI) BJP seniors Yenimireddi Malakondaiah and Duvvuri Subrahmanyam on Saturday criticised incidents of alleged attacks on police personnel during protests seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, stating that violence and attempts to exert pressure on the judiciary were unacceptable in a democracy.
Addressing a press conference here, the BJP leaders said every citizen had the right to express dissent peacefully, but resorting to violence would undermine the objectives of a protest and erode public support.
They pointed out that cases relating to the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and allegations concerning the deletion of voters' names were pending before the Supreme Court.
In this context, they said, protests should not be used to exert pressure on the judiciary.
The leaders alleged that the entry of anti-social elements and incidents of attacks on police personnel were diluting the purpose of the agitation.
They urged the youth to shun violence and cautioned them against becoming pawns in the hands of the Congress party.
Referring to allegations that 13 crore votes had been deleted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the BJP leaders claimed that the figures included 2.80 crore deceased voters, 6.30 crore people who had migrated, three crore voters who had not participated in the revision process and about 1.02 crore duplicate entries.
They advised the youth to await the Supreme Court's verdict on the matter and said protests should be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
They also cautioned that agitations held without the required permission could be unlawful.
