Kakinada: People in 11 cyclone-prone mandals being evacuated to safer places: Collector

Kakinada, Oct 26 (UNI) Kakinada District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad on Monday said people in 11 cyclone-prone mandals were being evacuated to safer places as the district administration geared up to meet any eventuality arising from the impending cyclone.
Addressing a press conference here, he said apart from six coastal mandals, five other mandals had also been identified as cyclone-prone.
Around 89,000 people living in coastal villages and habitations had been alerted about the possibility of the cyclone crossing the coast near the region, he said.
The administration had identified 101 cyclone shelters across the district and directed officials to shift people from vulnerable coastal villages to the shelters before the afternoon of October 27, he said.
As many as 130 people from Hope Island had already been evacuated by special boats to the island colony at Toorangi with the assistance of the Fisheries and Police departments. Arrangements were being made at cyclone shelters to provide food, drinking water, electricity, toilets and other basic amenities, he added.
The Collector said 4,559 of the 4,602 fishing boats in the district had returned to harbours and landing centres, while the remaining 43 boats had been safely anchored at Paradip harbour.
All hospitals, including the Government General Hospital, had been asked to ensure electricity backup. The Rural Water Supply Department had also been instructed to arrange alternative power backup for drinking water supply schemes.
Special teams had been kept ready to restore power supply in the event of electricity poles being uprooted by strong winds. Roads and Buildings and Panchayat Raj department officials, in coordination with tahsildars, would take steps to restore roads damaged by the cyclone, using teams equipped with JCBs and tree cutters, he said.
Officials had also been instructed to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies by maintaining adequate stocks of petrol and diesel at fuel stations.
The Collector advised people to remain indoors from the afternoon of October 27 until the evening of October 28 and postpone travel plans. Educational institutions would remain closed on October 27 and 28.
The government had deployed one National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and one State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team to the district to assist in relief operations in cyclone-prone areas.
Control rooms had been set up at district and mandal levels and would function round the clock, he added.
