Karnataka bus fares to go up from Nov 5: Minister

Bengaluru, Nov 1 (UNI) Karnataka Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh on Sunday announced that fares of state-run transport buses would be increased from November 5, with the extent of the hike to be finalised at a meeting on November 4.
Speaking to reporters in Chikkaballapur, the minister said a meeting involving officials of the Transport Department and the four state-run transport corporations would be held on November 4 to decide the quantum of the fare revision.
Defending the proposed increase, Suresh said the four transport corporations were facing cumulative losses of around Rs 9,000 crore, with their combined annual losses estimated at nearly Rs 2,000 crore.
He attributed the financial stress partly to repeated increases in diesel prices by the BJP-led Central government, which had pushed up the operating costs of the corporations.
The issue had figured in the recent Cabinet meeting, which authorised Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and the Cabinet to take a final decision on the proposed fare revision, he said.
Responding to criticism by BJP MP K Sudhakar, Suresh maintained that bus fares in Karnataka were lower than those in several other states and challenged him to compare the fares with those in BJP-ruled states.
He questioned whether the loss-making transport corporations could be allowed to continue accumulating losses without revising fares.
The minister also defended the recent Rs 8 per litre increase in Nandini milk prices, saying Rs 7 of the hike would go directly to farmers, while the remaining Re 1 would be passed on to milk unions.
He accused the BJP of adopting an anti-farmer stance and said farmers would teach the party a lesson in the elections.
