Kumaraswamy's residence received mobile phone in sting operation: Police

Bengaluru, Nov 1 (UNI) Karnataka Police on Sunday said an accused arrested in connection with a sting operation had told investigators that a mobile phone purchased from a shop in Delhi's Karol Bagh was handed over to Prajwal Prasad at the New Delhi residence of union Minister HD Kumaraswamy.
Addressing reporters, City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said Ritesh Pandey, arrested from Delhi, had disclosed during interrogation that he purchased the mobile phone along with another accused, Vinod Sharma, on the instructions of Prajwal Prasad.
According to Pandey's statement, the two returned to Kushak Road in New Delhi after purchasing the phone and handed it over to Prajwal Prasad, who was present at Kumaraswamy's residence.
The official said the three individuals were reportedly associated with the social media team of the minister's office.
"These claims are being verified. As of now, we have issued notices to Vinod Sharma and Prajwal Prasad. Both have not responded to the notices and are absconding. As per our information, they have applied for anticipatory bail," Singh said.
He added that further progress in the investigation would depend on the interrogation of the two persons.
Police are examining technical evidence, including CCTV footage, other digital records and financial transactions, particularly those between Prajwal Prasad and Ritesh Pandey, to establish the sequence of events.
Singh said Pandey had repeatedly named Prajwal Prasad when questioned about the purpose of purchasing the mobile phone and who had instructed him to do so.
The case relates to an alleged sting operation targeting former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, with the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch (CCB) investigating the alleged conspiracy behind the recording and circulation of the video.
During the earlier stages of the probe, police had said that Ritesh Pandey was linked to the residence of union Minister HD Kumaraswamy in New Delhi and that the video was uploaded on the instructions of Prajwal Prasad.
Investigators are also examining alleged financial transactions involving the accused to establish the roles played by different individuals in the case.
However, the official cautioned that Pandey's statements were yet to be independently verified and would be subjected to further scrutiny during the investigation and interrogation of the other accused.
The police said multiple investigating teams were probing the cybercrime case from different angles and efforts were underway to verify all the claims.
