Bengaluru, May 25 (UNI) Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader on Sunday announced the unconditional revocation of suspension orders issued against 18 BJP MLAs who had been barred from the House for six months following unruly conduct during the Budget session in March.
The decision came after extensive consultations with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka and Law Minister H K Patil.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting in this regard, Khader said the suspended members had realised their mistake and conveyed their regret over the incident that occurred on March 21, when a group of BJP legislators stormed the Well of the House and raised slogans.
"Two months have passed, and those who disrespected the Chair have expressed remorse. They told me it was not intentional, but a spontaneous outburst of emotion. The Leader of the Opposition also requested reconsideration, as did the Governor and many senior leaders," Khader said.
Acknowledging the impact of suspension on a legislator's public life and responsibilities, the Speaker said it was his duty to ensure that all MLAs are treated with dignity across the state. "Suspension affects their ability to attend committee meetings and often brings embarrassment in public forums. They are not my enemies, they are my colleagues. We are lifting the suspension without any conditions, in the larger interest of the state," he declared.
The House had passed a resolution on March 21 suspending the BJP MLAs for six months, with six conditions attached. Sunday's revocation brings an end to the impasse and signals a return to normalcy in the Assembly. UNI BDN SS
