Kavitha urges Telangana govt to declare drought-hit mandals, convene special Cabinet meeting

Hyderabad, Oct 4 (UNI) Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) president K Kavitha on Sunday urged the State government to immediately declare drought-affected mandals and convene a special Cabinet meeting to protect farmers and crops.
Speaking to the media at the TRS office in Banjara Hills, Kavitha said drought conditions were prevailing across the State, with rainfall deficits of 38 per cent in August and 30 per cent in September. She claimed groundwater levels had fallen sharply in several areas and farmers were being forced to burn crops.
She alleged that the government had failed to prepare for the drought despite warnings about El Niño conditions and demanded uninterrupted power supply to protect standing crops. She also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend Central assistance to Telangana and other drought-hit southern states.
Kavitha expressed concern over declining reservoir levels and a possible drinking water crisis, alleging that the State government had failed to safeguard Krishna river waters and irrigation projects.
She said TRS constituency in-charges would visit villages across the State to assess farmers' problems and launch a special action plan on drought-related issues. She also raised concerns over the GO 317 employees' issue, hospital conditions and teachers' protests.
On electoral reforms, Kavitha reiterated her party's demand for a return to paper ballots instead of EVMs, saying her party would take up the issue at the national level. She also said the TRS was prepared to contest any election in Telangana, including the proposed Khairatabad by-election.
