Kerala Assembly clears salary hike for MLAs: Minimum pension of former MLAs raised to Rs 10,000

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 29 (UNI) The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a Bill to enhance the salaries and allowances of ministers and MLAs, besides increasing pensions for former legislators, approving a revision eight years after the previous hike in 2018.
The monthly remuneration of MLAs will increase from Rs 70,000 to Rs 98,000, while that of ministers will rise from Rs 1.08 lakh to Rs 1.33 lakh, according to reports on the revised pay structure. The minimum monthly pension of former legislators will go up from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000.
The legislation was passed without dissent from the ruling or Opposition benches on the concluding day of the nine-day Assembly session, which was subsequently adjourned sine die.
The revision covers various allowances and benefits available to legislators, including constituency and travel allowances, fuel-related benefits and other facilities. The salary of staff appointed by MLAs will also be increased from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 a month.
The pension payable to former legislators will vary according to their length of service, with higher amounts prescribed for those who served longer terms. The changes are intended to revise the existing benefits structure, which had remained unchanged since 2018.
The State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister V D Satheesan, had approved the proposal on Wednesday before the Bill was brought before the Assembly. The government had considered the revision following discussions with political party leaders and representations from legislators about rising expenses.
Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan welcomed the unanimous passage of the legislation and noted that several members had expressed difficulties in meeting the rising costs associated with their official and constituency responsibilities.
The Speaker also requested the government to provide an additional personal assistant to each MLA to help manage their workload. Satheesan said the suggestion would be considered.
However, BJP Nemom MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that he would not accept the enhanced salary and allowances, citing the state's financial difficulties. He said he would instead use his salary and allowances for the welfare of poor people in his constituency.
During the proceedings, the Chief Minister stressed the need for fiscal discipline and accountability in public expenditure. He said development projects should be completed within stipulated timelines and warned that delays, particularly those arising from land acquisition, could place an additional burden on the state exchequer.
The Assembly also passed several other Bills, including Appropriation Bills, before adjourning sine die.
Presenting a summary of the session, the Speaker said the House had received 3,574 questions, of which 270 starred and 2,538 unstarred questions were answered. Of six notices for urgent questions, two were taken up. The Assembly also considered 18 calling-attention motions and 141 submissions during the session.
