Kerala steps up stroke awareness: Minister joins ‘Walk for Brain’

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 29 (UNI) The Kerala Health Department on Thursday organised a ‘Walk for Brain’ walkathon here as part of World Stroke Day observance to raise awareness about the early symptoms of stroke, the importance of seeking immediate medical attention and measures to prevent the potentially life-threatening condition.
Health Minister K. Muraleedharan participated in the walkathon after flagging it off from Manaveeyam Veedhi. The walk concluded at the Institution of Engineers Hall, where the World Stroke Day programme was held.
The awareness campaign focused on the need to recognise the initial warning signs of stroke, ensure timely medical intervention and adopt healthy lifestyle practices to reduce the risk of the condition. It also sought to sensitise healthcare workers and the public to the importance of early diagnosis and emergency treatment.
Dr Dilip R, nodal officer of the Stroke Centre and Stroke Cath Lab at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, administered the World Stroke Day pledge.
On the occasion, the minister released the logo of the state government's Hridayaragam project, which aims to prevent diseases through early detection and timely treatment.
Muraleedharan said the project would initially be implemented in the Vattiyoorkavu, Idukki and Nilambur Assembly constituencies before being extended across Kerala.
Under the initiative, health workers will visit households to screen people for chronic diseases and facilitate early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The minister said the household screening approach was adopted as many people were reluctant to visit medical camps for health check-ups.
Stressing the importance of prevention, he said serious illnesses, including cancer, could be treated successfully if detected at an early stage. Several diseases could also be prevented or controlled through timely medical care and lifestyle changes, he added.
