Kerala traders urge complete withdrawal of MDR on UPI transactions

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 13 (UNI) The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi has welcomed the decision to defer the proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI transactions, but urged the authorities to withdraw the move altogether, stating that it would adversely affect small traders.
Samithi state president S.S. Manoj, who is also the national secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), said postponing the implementation would not resolve the concerns of traders, whose financial difficulties would persist even after the festive season.
He said union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had held discussions with CAIT leaders at Kartavya Bhavan on September 30. A delegation led by CAIT national secretary general Praveen Khandelwal had presented the issues and concerns of the trading community before the minister.
The minister had assured the delegation that the proposal would be considered further before implementation, Manoj said.
He said the subsequent deferment of the proposed MDR on UPI transactions was a welcome step, but stressed that the demand of traders was for the complete withdrawal of the proposal rather than a mere postponement of its implementation.
