Kumaraswamy pushes for JD(S) ticket in Hiriyur bypoll

Bengaluru, Nov 4 (UNI) union Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday made a strong pitch for his party to contest the forthcoming Hiriyur Assembly byelection as the NDA candidate, signalling that the constituency could emerge as a point of negotiation between the BJP and JD(S) despite their alliance.
Making his preference clear after a meeting with JD(S) leaders from Hiriyur and Chitradurga, Kumaraswamy said the party's local leaders had strongly advocated fielding a JD(S) candidate and that he would take up the demand with the BJP's central leadership before a final decision.
"I am of the opinion that a JDS candidate should be fielded as the NDA candidate in the Hiriyur byelection. I will discuss this with BJP's central leadership. The two parties are contesting the elections together. We will work together without any confusion in the Hiriyur constituency as well. The byelection is not easy. I am of the opinion that a JDS candidate should contest as the NDA candidate," he said.
The union Minister said the question of a consensus NDA candidate had been discussed with leaders of the Kadugolla community and BJP leaders at the Centre, underlining the need for coordination between the two alliance partners.
The JD(S) demand assumes significance as BJP's central leadership is yet to take a final call on the candidate, with Kumaraswamy indicating that the party would press its claim through consultations rather than allow any confusion within the alliance.
Turning his attack on the Congress government, Kumaraswamy alleged that Karnataka's financial position had deteriorated, claiming that contractors were awaiting nearly Rs 38,000 crore towards completed works.
He accused the government of announcing fresh projects and holding foundation-stone ceremonies without making corresponding budgetary provisions or securing financial approvals.
On the continuing agitation by sugarcane farmers, he demanded that the state government provide additional support of at least Rs 750 per tonne, accusing it of ignoring farmers' demands for remunerative prices.
Kumaraswamy also criticised the government's alleged neglect of a Rs 4,500-crore water project approved during his tenure as Chief Minister in 2006-07 to fill lakes in Chitradurga, Tumakuru and Kolar districts.
"The government has completely ignored this ambitious project," he alleged.
He said the BJP and JD(S) would work together in Hiriyur and that the final decision on the NDA nominee would be taken after discussions with the BJP leadership.
