Kunamneni demands removal of CEC, raises voter deletion and drought concerns

Hyderabad, Oct 13 (UNI) CPI Telangana State Secretary and MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao on Tuesday accused the BJP-led Central government of weakening democratic institutions and demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of eligible voters being deleted during voter list revision.
Addressing a press conference at Makhdoom Bhavan, the CPI state office, he insisted that no voter should be removed without prior notice and an opportunity to present their case. He also opposed restrictions on protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and urged the judiciary to safeguard constitutional rights.
Kunamneni said 315 mandals in Telangana had been declared drought-affected and demanded immediate relief for farmers who had suffered crop losses. He sought clarity on assistance for farmers who had already cultivated paddy, compensation for crop losses and the expansion of employment guarantee works in drought-hit areas. He also urged the Centre to assess drought conditions nationwide and provide necessary relief.
Congratulating the AITUC-affiliated union on its victory in the recent Telangana RTC recognised union elections, he said trade unions should respect the workers’ mandate and focus on resolving their grievances rather than politicising the results.
Clarifying the CPI’s political position, Kunamneni said the party would support the Congress on issues benefiting the public while opposing decisions detrimental to people’s interests. He added that a decision on support in the forthcoming MLC elections would be taken after voter registration was completed.
He also called for an all-party meeting to find a mutually acceptable solution to financial concerns in the power sector, warning against placing an additional burden of Rs 5,000 crore on the public amid outstanding dues of around Rs 56,000 crore involving Singareni and the power sector.
Telangana State Rythu Sangham General Secretary Pashya Padma, senior AITUC leader V.S. Bose, RTC Employees union State President S. Babu and Treasurer Prasad Reddy were present.
