Local clubs play key role in nurturing youth and sportspersons: Manipur CM Khemchand

Imphal, Oct 1 (UNI) Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Thursday highlighted the important role played by local clubs in shaping the character of young people and supporting the development of sportspersons in Manipur.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Chingamathak College Road Youths’ Development Association (CRYDA) at Ima Chinga Lairembi Meetin Shang, Chingamathak, Nameirakpam Leikai, Imphal.
Khemchand said local clubs functioning in different localities across Manipur have become an important part of the State’s social fabric and play a significant role in nurturing youth.
He said the success of many sportspersons from the State could also be attributed to the support provided by local clubs. According to him, clubs often extend assistance to talented young people, particularly those from economically weaker sections, helping them pursue opportunities in sports.
The Chief Minister said this tradition of community support was something Manipur could be proud of, adding that the contribution of local clubs to sports development complemented government initiatives.
Recalling his earlier tenure as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Khemchand said he had more opportunities at that time to visit localities in Singjamei Assembly Constituency, interact with residents and take up their grievances.
He said his responsibilities as Chief Minister, amid the prevailing law-and-order situation in the State, had limited the time available for such interactions compared with the past.
Referring to prominent political leaders from Singjamei Assembly Constituency, Irengbam Tompok Singh and Haobam Bhuban Singh, the Chief Minister described them as the “Pride of Singjamei”. He expressed his desire to be remembered in a similar manner in the future.
Khemchand appealed to residents to extend collective support and cooperation towards restoring normalcy in the State.
CRYDA president Kakchingtabam Ajitkumar Sharma appreciated the participation of local residents and members of the celebration committee in organising the Golden Jubilee programme. He said the association could not function effectively without the active involvement and support of the local community.
As part of the celebration, the Chief Minister paid floral tribute to the departed founder members of CRYDA. Mementoes were also presented to founder members, former and present office-bearers, donors and members of the Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee.
Acting Mayor of Imphal Municipal Corporation Laisangbam Lokeshwar Singh, Ward No. 15 Corporator Thokchom Bankimchandra Singh, Ward No. 16 Corporator Thokchom Eliza, senior advocate and Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee chairman Naorem Umakanta Singh, Chingamathak Nupi Thougal Lup president Leiphrakpam (O) Bimo Devi, office-bearers of CRYDA and residents attended the programme.
