Maha: Aamir Khan meets Raj Thackeray

Mumbai, Oct 18 (UNI) Bollywood actor Aamir Khan met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray at his Mumbai residence on Sunday, sparking speculation against the backdrop of the controversy surrounding US-based actor Imran Khan, Aamir's nephew, who has challenged a notice directing him to leave India by October 28 over his participation in a political protest.
The details of the meeting were not immediately known. There was no information to establish whether the meeting was connected with the notice issued to Imran Khan or his ongoing legal challenge before the Bombay High Court.
The meeting comes at a time when Imran Khan is contesting an order issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) following his participation in a protest held at the August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai on October 10. The demonstration had called for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Imran Khan, 43, is a United States citizen and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The FRRO has directed him to leave the country by October 28, under Sections 7 and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
Challenging the notice, Imran Khan has approached the Bombay High Court, arguing that the action was arbitrary, disproportionate and unconstitutional. His petition is expected to be mentioned for an urgent hearing before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna.
In his plea, Imran Khan has questioned the grounds on which the notice was issued, contending that it did not disclose the reasons for the action, the supporting material or the specific statutory violation allegedly committed by him. He has also alleged that the authorities acted without conducting an inquiry, issuing a show-cause notice or providing him an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
The petition places the legality of the notice and the procedure followed by the authorities at the centre of the dispute. The High Court is yet to adjudicate the challenge, and the allegations made in the plea remain subject to judicial consideration.
The controversy has brought renewed attention to the legal position of OCI cardholders, who are foreign citizens permitted to visit, reside in and undertake specified activities in India under the applicable legal framework. OCI status, however, does not confer Indian citizenship, and the rights and restrictions applicable to such cardholders are governed by law.
The outcome of Imran Khan's petition will depend on the grounds raised before the court and the response of the authorities.
