Maha: Congress MLC Satej Patil accuses Fadnavis of plotting to sell off Gokul Milk Co-operative to Amul

Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) Congress MLC Satej ‘Bunty’ Patil today accused the Fadnavis government of plotting to sell off the Kolhapur-based Gokul Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation, which is officially known as the Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh Ltd, to the Gujarat-based Amul.
Speaking to media persons here, he said, “I planned to bring Gokul’s gulab jamuns and shrikhand with me today, but forgot them in the rush to reach Mumbai. Better enjoy these Gokul products while you still can, because tomorrow they may no longer be available under the Gokul name. There are attempts being made to take over Gokul and stick an Amul label on its products”.
Patil alleged that Fadnavis cabinet ministers Hasan Mushrif (of the Sunetra Ajit Pawar-led NCP) and Chandrakant Patil (BJP) are directly involved in the move to introduce a new legislation, in order to change the Maharashtra Cooperatives Act and made it applicable retrospectively, so that they can take over the Kolhapur-based Gokul milk co-operative.
Patil stated that no minister discussed this issue at Wednesday's cabinet meeting chaired by Fadnavis.
“How can a law be introduced after an election has been held and then applied retrospectively? The Fadnavis government is disregarding the mandate given by farmer members of the Gokul milk co-operative, who will never accept this decision,” Congress MLC said.
“What was the need to make this law? What impact will it have on Maharashtra? Will this decision be acceptable to the people? Basically, this law is wrong. How can such a law be implemented with retrospective effect? If this law had been made before elections were held, it would have been understandable. However, making such a law after elections were held in which the BJP-led Mahayuti got defeated, is completely wrong,” he said.
Patil further said that the members of the milk co-operative will take to the streets to protest against the Fadnavis government and also seek legal recourse.
“A massive protest march will be organised from Dasara Chowk to the District Collector’s office in Kolhapur on Monday, November 9, ” he announced.
Patil stated that the Gokul milk co-operative supports the livelihoods of 5.5 lakh farmers in Kolhapur, with nearly Rs 100 crore paid every 10 days for the milk they produce and contribute to the co-operative.
“The cooperative collects 20 lakh litres of milk everyday. Gokul belongs to the farmers, but the BJP government is disregarding their mandate,” Congress MLC added.
