Maha: Fadnavis mocks Rahul Gandhi after he raps BJP for subverting Gokul Milk Co-Operative poll mandate

Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today mocked Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, after the latter criticised the BJP for allegedly subverting the election results of the Kolhapur-based Gokul Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation, which is officially known as the Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh Ltd.
"Milk producers defeated BJP in Gokul. Then BJP changed the rules after the elections. Induct 4 directors, convert 12 into 16, steal majority. This is theft of milk producers' votes. This is adulteration of the mandate. The BJP has become so desperate that it is going to any extent to save power everywhere. Those who stole votes of milk producers should remember that farmers will not forget this," Rahul Gandhi tweeted on his X handle today.
Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's tweet on X, Fadnavis told media persons here that, "A person who dreams of becoming the Prime Minister has tweeted about a small co-operative body election. There are only four-and-a-half thousand voters in Gokul. But for that, Rahul Gandhi has to tweet from Delhi. This is not a national issue. But Rahul Gandhi is getting involved in this small matter as well."
Fadnavis stated that according to the Maharashtra Cooperatives Act and Gokul's bylaws, a quorum of at least 14 members is required for an elected majority. He stated that the required quorum is not complete unless there are 14 elected members.
The Congress MLA Satej Patil-backed panel got 13 members elected, while the BJP-led Mahayuti-backed panel managed to get 12 members elected to the board of the Gokul milk co-operative.
Fadnavis stated that if the quorum is not complete, the chairman of the Gokul milk co-operative cannot be elected, according to the Maharashtra Cooperatives Act and Gokul's bylaws.
He stated that a meeting was held to elect the chairman but only 13 elected members were present, due to which there was no quorum. Therefore, the meeting had to be cancelled because the quorum was not completed and the chairman of the co-operative could not be elected.
"Two or three meetings were held to elect the Gokul Co-operative chairman and the quorum could not be completed each time. This would mean that the election will stand cancelled. Therefore, in order to avoid this situation, the government decided to appoint four members to the Gokul board," Fadnavis reasoned.
"If two or three meetings get cancelled like this, an administrator can be directly appointed to Gokul according to the laws, after which elections have to be held," he said.
Fadnavis explained that his government took the middle path of appointing four members on the Gokul board.
Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a tweet accused the Maharastra unit of the BJP of subverting the election results of the milk co-operative.
"We are challenging this decision in the Supreme Court to defend the democratic mandate and the autonomy of cooperative institutions," according to another tweet by Congress spokesperson Pawah Khera.
The Congress accused Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis of taking a special interest in the affairs of the Kolhapur-based farmers' milk co-operative in order to sell it off to Amul, which is based in the neighbouring state of Gujarat.
The Congress accused the 12 BJP-led Mahayuti-backed elected co-operative members of stalling the election of the chairman by deliberately remaining absent, and approached the Kolhapur Circuit Bench of the Bombay High Court, which directed a fresh election on November 10.
According to the Congress, the Fadnavis government approved a proposal to nominate four government directors with voting rights, potentially altering the electoral arithmetic and overturning the mandate of milk producers, instead of allowing the elected milk co-operative board to function.
The Congress also accused the Fadnavis government of brazenly attempting to subvert the democratic mandate of milk producers at the Gokul Milk Federation by using legislative changes to manipulate the composition of the elected board of the milk co-operative.
According to the Congress, a Congress-led panel, led by Congress MLA Satej Patil, won 13 out of 25 seats on the elected board of the Kolhapur-based milk co-operative, securing a majority, beating the BJP-led Mahayuti candidates.
