Maha: FDA seizes food stock worth Rs 5 crore over illegal repackaging of expired products, 2 cases registered

Mumbai, Oct 30 (UNI) Taking serious note of illegal reuse and sale of food products such as expired, spoiled and returned food products allegedly shown as destroyed on paper but repackaged and sold in the market, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has conducted enforcement operations over the past few days and seized food stock worth approximately Rs 5 crore.
Addressing a press conference here, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said rhat a total of 10 actions have been carried out and two criminal cases registered, with 32 accused, including the owners of the establishments, named in the cases.
He said expired, spoiled or returned food products were often shown as having been disposed of through official documentation, while the actual stock was diverted through agents and brought back into the market. These products were subsequently repackaged and sold to consumers. In some instances, manufacturing dates were also allegedly altered to make the products appear fit for sale, he informed.
To curb the malpractice, the FDA has issued a dedicated compliance order making it mandatory for companies to provide documentary evidence of the proper destruction of expired, damaged and returned food products, Mundhe added.
