Maha: Guardian Minister Mahajan directs to urgently submit proposal to declare 5 more talukas drought-hit

Nashik, Oct 2 (UNI) Maharashtra Water Resources and Nashik District Guardian Minister Girish Mahajan has directed officials to urgently submit a proposal to the state government seeking inclusion of five more talukas—Chandwad, Trimbakeshwar, Niphad, Dindori and Nashik—in the list of drought-affected areas.
He issued the directions while reviewing the drought situation at the District Collectorate on Thursday afternoon. He also instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive water management plan extending until August 2027.
MLA Prof. Devyani Pharande, Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council President Triveni Tungar, District Collector Ayush Prasad, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Omkar Pawar and senior officials from various departments attended the meeting.
Mahajan said rainfall had declined this year due to the impact of El Niño, making it necessary to use available water resources judiciously. Although dams in the district currently have adequate water storage, officials must plan its utilisation carefully to ensure availability until August 2027.
He stressed that planning should cover not only drinking water requirements but also fodder and water for livestock. Farmers should be encouraged to cultivate fodder crops to address the anticipated shortage.
District Collector Ayush Prasad informed the meeting that crop damage assessments were underway in view of the drought. Water is being supplied through nine tankers in Yeola taluka and seven tankers in Nandgaon taluka. Various measures are also being implemented to promote fodder cultivation.
The meeting also reviewed the land acquisition process for the Nashik Ring Road. Acquisition has been completed in 20 villages, and Rs ₹1,023 crore has been disbursed through direct purchase, officials informed the meeting.
Approximately 96 hectares of land have been acquired through direct purchase, while government land is being utilised for the remaining requirements.
Mahajan also reviewed several proposed and ongoing development initiatives, including the planned blackbuck safari at Mamdapur in Yeola taluka, the Trimbakeshwar tourism circuit covering Dugarwadi and Pahine, and the development of Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary.
The meeting also discussed the construction of a statue and museum dedicated to Sir M. Visvesvaraya on an island in Ozharkhed Dam using tourism development funds, the establishment of a memorial for martyrs in Malegaon, promotion of sericulture and increased use of drone technology in agriculture.
Reviewing projects under the District Annual Plan, Mahajan directed officials to ensure quality standards in all development works. He called for strengthening healthcare and educational facilities and expanding sports infrastructure for athletes. He also reviewed the ongoing work at Abhinav Bharat Mandir.
He emphasised that tourism development must preserve the natural beauty of destinations while prioritising visitor safety and providing essential amenities and infrastructure in harmony with the surrounding environment.
He further called for development plans that promote wildlife and nature conservation, create employment opportunities for local youth and help reduce human-wildlife conflict.
With preparations underway for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Mahajan reviewed various development works in Trimbakeshwar. The ceremonial flag-hoisting programme is scheduled for October 31.
He assessed preparations and arrangements at the helipad, Kushavart Kund, Purohit Sangh premises, Godavari Kund and the Trimbakeshwar temple complex.
During the meeting, Mahajan also held discussions with representatives of the tribal students' organisation regarding problems faced by ashram schools.
The meeting emphasised ensuring that students in these institutions receive essential facilities and that their basic needs are adequately addressed.
