Maha: Mumbai doctor swindled of Rs 3 Cr in sophisticated cyber kidnapping

Mumbai, June 28 (UNI) A 70-year-old physician was allegedly defrauded of Rs three crore after being subjected to an eight-day "digital arrest" by cyber criminals who falsely implicated her in a money laundering scheme, police said today.
The elaborate scam began in May when the victim received a call from an individual posing as Telecom department official Amit Kumar. He alleged a SIM card registered with her personal details was used for criminal activities. Shortly afterward, another imposter, identifying himself as Crime Branch officer Samadhan Pawar, contacted her, claiming her banking details were discovered during a raid at an airline executive's residence linked to money laundering investigations.
To legitimise the ruse, the fraudsters sent fabricated documents bearing logos of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The deception escalated when a man in police uniform conducted a video call with the victim's husband.
Convinced of the threat, the doctor endured eight days of coercive surveillance – termed "digital arrest" by perpetrators – requiring hourly check-ins via video. Under duress, she transferred Rs three crore to multiple accounts specified by the criminals.
The victim filed a for complaint at the West Region Cyber police station on June five, prompting registration of a case.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Rs 82 lakh of the stolen funds were converted into cryptocurrency.
Authorities are actively pursuing the suspects and attempting fund recovery.
