Maha: Nagpur Symbiosis Professor put on leave over inappropriate messages to ex-student

Nagpur, Oct 19 (UNI) Symbiosis International (Deemed University) has placed a professor from its Nagpur campus on forced leave after a former female student accused him of sending inappropriate messages and urging her to adopt Islamic religious practices, a senior university official told UNI today.
The controversy has prompted protests by right-wing organisations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which have demanded the professor’s removal and stringent action against him.
The university said in a statement issued on Sunday that it had constituted a high-powered committee to investigate the allegations and would decide on further action after receiving its report.
Police officials said the former student, who left the institution around six months ago and whose father had not filed a formal complaint or submitted evidence of the alleged messages, despite being approached by the police on three occasions.
According to a police official, the allegations could not be independently verified in the absence of a formal complaint and supporting material.
The matter came to the fore after members of various organisations assembled on the university campus around 11.30 am on Saturday to protest against the professor.
Police intervened and facilitated a discussion between the protesters and university authorities.
A delegation subsequently met the university administration.
In its statement, the university said it had taken cognisance of reports circulating on social media and the complaint concerning the matter.
It said the committee would examine the allegations and that any further decision would be taken after its findings were submitted.
The institution also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of students and staff.
A senior police official said the former student’s family had been raising the issue with right-wing organisations but had not approached the police despite repeated requests to register a complaint.
Sources said the professor has also submitted his resignation.
