Maha: Shiv Sena activists detained amid tensions at Durgadi Fort during Eid prayers

Thane, June 7 (UNI) Tension gripped the Durgadi Fort area in Kalyan town of Mahrashtra on Saturday when activists from both groups of rival Shiv Sena allegedly attempted to reach the goddess Durga temple located atop the fort, while Eid ul-Azha prayers were being held peacefully at its foothills.
Workers from both the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arrived separately at the base of the fort in the morning. They staged bell-ringing protests and demanded access to the temple, converging at Shivaji Chowk and raising slogans calling for the “liberation of Durgadi Fort.”
Anticipating unrest, police deployed a strong presence at Lal Chowki and the fort, erecting barricades and roadblocks to prevent any breach. Despite these measures, members from both factions tried to push past the police cordon and proceed toward the temple.
“Repeated attempts were made to dismantle barricades, but our personnel maintained firm control to uphold law and order,” a senior police official said.
Denied entry, the protesters performed 'aarti' at Lal Chowki. Several were detained for violating prohibitory orders under Section 144. The fort area was sealed off, and vehicular traffic was diverted from early morning to prevent escalation.
Authorities stressed that religious activities should not be politicised or turned into confrontations. The dispute over worship rights at Durgadi Fort has been ongoing for decades, involving both Hindu and Muslim communities.
The legal battle over the mosque and edgah inside the fort dates back to 1976 when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit. The fort also houses a Hindu temple.
Until 1968, the mosque and edgah served the local Muslim community’s daily prayers before the Maharashtra government leased the premises to the Kalyan Municipal Council. Last December, the Kalyan civil court ruled in favour of the state government, dismissing the suit.
