Maha to lead change to protect democracy, Constitution: Congress

Mumbai, Oct 1 (UNI) Newly appointed Maharashtra Congress in-charge, Dr Sirivella Prasad, today said the country needed political change to protect democracy and the Constitution, and expressed confidence that the process would begin from Maharashtra.
Prasad, who began his five-day tour of Maharashtra, formally assumed charge at the state party headquarters Tilak Bhavan in Mumbai.
Addressing party leaders and workers, he alleged that democratic institutions were being weakened and raised issues including unemployment, farmers' distress and irregularities in the electoral process.
Prasad called upon Congress workers to strengthen the organisation and work among farmers, workers, Dalits, minorities and youth.
Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal said the party would focus on organisational expansion at the booth, village and mandal levels and set a target of completing the exercise by December 31.
He also said the party would continue its campaign on issues including paper leaks and drought relief.
AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik criticised the appointment and functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that changes in law had weakened safeguards relating to the Election Commission.
Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar and senior leader Balasaheb Thorat also raised concerns over drought conditions in Maharashtra and the functioning of democratic institutions. Wadettiwar announced that he would donate one year's MLA salary towards drought relief.
Earlier, Prasad paid tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivaji Park and Dr B.R. Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi before attending the programme at the Congress headquarters. The programme was attended by senior Congress leaders, MPs, MLAs, office-bearers and district presidents. UNI SP SS
