Congress and NCP-SP to join Uddhav Thackeray's Oct 4 Mumbai protest against SIR

Mumbai, Oct 1 (UNI) The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar have decided to participate in the major protest march announced by Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai on October 4 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The decision comes after Uddhav Thackeray expressed displeasure during an INDIA alliance meeting over what was described as the Congress policy of acting independently.
Senior Congress leader Nana Patole subsequently clarified that the Congress remained with Shiv Sena UBT as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra and would participate in the October 4 demonstration.
Patole said the demonstration was a public movement in which different social organisations, political parties and ordinary citizens would participate.
NCP SP MP Supriya Sule has also confirmed that her party will join the protest.
Party state president Shashikant Shinde said Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar held discussions following the Maha Vikas Aghadi meeting, after which Pawar directed the party to participate in the demonstration.
Shinde said he held a meeting on Thursday with NCP SP office bearers from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. He alleged that holding protests in Maharashtra and across the country was becoming increasingly difficult and claimed that when people took a stand against what he described as anti people policies of the government, official machinery was used to exert pressure and attempts were made to discredit them.
According to Shinde, NCP SP office bearers will participate in the October 4 march without carrying the party flag.
Shinde also targeted the Maharashtra government over the Maratha reservation issue, alleging that commitments made by the government had not yet been fulfilled.
He said Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange had given the government three months to act, but alleged that attempts had been made during the past month to put pressure on him. Shinde described such conduct as dangerous for democracy.
With both the Congress and NCP SP confirming their participation, the October 4 Mumbai protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise will now include the two parties along with Shiv Sena UBT.
