Maha: Truck rams into Durga idol-carrying pickup on Samruddhi Expressway, 7 killed

Mumbai, Oct 2 (UNI) At least seven people were killed and 18 others injured in a horrific road accident involving a truck and a pickup van on the Samruddhi Mahamarg in Maharashtra's Amravati district in the early hours of Friday, police said.
The accident occurred around 3.30 am near chainage number 97, close to Amravati-Dhamangaon Railway, when a Bolero pickup van carrying a Durga idol from Shegaon to Wardha collided head-on with a truck.
According to preliminary information, the collision was so severe that seven occupants of the pickup van died on the spot, while 18 others sustained serious injuries. The impact left the occupants trapped and triggered an emergency rescue operation.
Soon after receiving information about the accident, police personnel and rescue teams rushed to the spot and began efforts to rescue the injured and clear the accident site.
The injured were immediately shifted to hospitals in Sawangi and Sevagram in Wardha district. They are undergoing treatment, and further details about their condition are awaited.
The accident caused disruption on the expressway as rescue operations and the removal of the damaged vehicles were carried out.
Police have taken the truck driver into custody as part of the investigation. The identities of the deceased and injured are being established, while officials are gathering details about the circumstances leading to the collision.
The police are investigating the cause of the accident, including the circumstances under which the two vehicles collided.
