Maha: Two farmers end lives in Vidarbha amid agrarian distress

Bhandara/Chandrapur, Oct 8 (UNI) Two farmers from Vidarbha allegedly died by suicide in separate incidents in Bhandara and Chandrapur districts on Thursday, with crop losses, debt burden and prolonged agricultural distress cited as the suspected reasons behind the tragedies, police said.
In Bhandara district, Rajendra Amar Sapate, a resident of Dhop village in Mohadi tehsil, allegedly died by suicide after facing severe financial hardship arising from poor agricultural returns and mounting debt.
Sources said Sapate had been struggling with drought-like conditions that adversely affected crop production. The financial burden of supporting the education of his two children further aggravated his difficulties. His daughter is pursuing a nursing course in Nashik, while his son is studying agriculture in Akola.
Sapate had recently met Maharashtra's Bhandara district guardian minister Dr Pankaj Bhoyar during a visit to assess the drought situation and had highlighted the hardships faced by farmers in the region.
Unable to cope with the continuing financial stress, Sapate allegedly jumped into a well and ended his life. The incident has triggered concern among local farmers, who have demanded a reassessment of drought conditions and immediate financial assistance to the bereaved family.
Police have registered an accidental death case and further investigation is underway.
In a separate incident in Chandrapur district, a 45-year-old farmer allegedly died by suicide in Marda village, reportedly due to repeated crop losses and financial distress.
The deceased, identified as Manish Raghunath Makode, was found hanging from a tree in his agricultural field on Thursday morning.
Officials said Makode owned farmland in the village and had suffered substantial losses owing to continuous crop failure.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that persistent poor yields had pushed him into financial and mental stress, leading him to take the extreme step.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
