Mahatma Gandhi: The One-Man Army

Nagpur, Oct 1 (UNI) More than seven decades after his death, Mahatma Gandhi continues to be remembered not merely as the leader of India's freedom struggle but as a symbol of moral courage whose influence transcended borders and generations.
As the nation marks Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Gandhi's life offers a reminder of how a single individual, armed neither with weapons nor political power, mobilised millions through the principles of truth and non-violence.
The phrase "One-Man Army" aptly captures Gandhi's unique leadership. It does not refer to military might, but to his ability to inspire ordinary, poor and unarmed people to challenge injustice through peaceful means.
His army was built on truth, his weapon was non-violence and his greatest strength was faith in the human conscience.
Rabindranath Tagore is widely credited with addressing Gandhi as "Mahatma" in 1915, while Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose referred to him as the "Father of the Nation" during an Azad Hind Radio broadcast in 1944.
Another notable tribute came from Lord Mountbatten, who described Gandhi as a "One-Man Boundary Force" during the turbulent days of Partition in 1947.
While violence continued in Punjab despite the deployment of thousands of troops, Gandhi worked tirelessly in Calcutta to restore communal harmony.
Mountbatten, in a letter dated August 26, 1947, reportedly contrasted the presence of 55,000 soldiers in Punjab with Gandhi's solitary peace mission in Bengal.
Gandhi's efforts in violence-hit Calcutta are often described as the "Miracle of Calcutta".
Refusing to seek safety, he stayed in troubled localities, engaged directly with residents, held prayer meetings and encouraged dialogue between communities.
His intervention is credited with helping calm tensions during one of the most volatile periods in the subcontinent's history.
The roots of Gandhi's philosophy can be traced to South Africa, where he experienced racial discrimination firsthand after being thrown out of a train compartment at Pietermaritzburg in 1893 despite holding a valid ticket.
The incident became a turning point in his life and laid the foundation for the concept of Satyagraha, or non-violent resistance based on truth.
The Dandi March of 1930 remains one of the most powerful examples of Gandhi's approach. Beginning with 79 companions, the march transformed opposition to the British salt law into a nationwide movement that drew thousands into the freedom struggle and demonstrated the power of collective non-violent action.
Gandhi's influence extended far beyond India. Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela acknowledged the impact of his ideas on their own struggles for justice and equality.
Physicist Albert Einstein famously observed that future generations would find it difficult to believe that such a person had walked the earth in flesh and blood.
Throughout his life, Gandhi repeatedly placed himself in areas affected by violence, including Noakhali, Bihar and Calcutta.
He sought to resolve conflict through dialogue, prayer, personal engagement and, when necessary, fasting.
His efforts underscored his belief that lasting peace could be achieved only by transforming human attitudes rather than defeating opponents through force.
In a world still grappling with war, violence and intolerance, Gandhi's message of truth, compassion and non-violence remains relevant.
His legacy demonstrates that moral authority can sometimes prove more powerful than weapons and that lasting change can be achieved through peaceful means.
For these reasons, Gandhi's description as a "One-Man Army" endures as a tribute not to military power but to the extraordinary moral force that helped shape India's freedom movement and inspired people across the world.
