Manipur Governor Bhalla launches nutritional support for TB patients, distributes AI-enabled X-ray machines

Imphal, Oct 3 (UNI) Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Saturday attended a programme at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), Imphal, for the distribution of nutritional food baskets to tuberculosis (TB) patients and their family caregivers under the Nikshay Mitra initiative.
The initiative is being supported by National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme as part of the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan under the National TB Elimination Programme.
NTPC has sanctioned around ₹2.9 crore under its CSR initiative to provide six months of nutritional assistance to around 1,800 TB patients and their families across all districts of Manipur.
During the programme, Governor Bhalla distributed nutritional food baskets to TB patients and their caregivers and handed over 30 portable AI-enabled handheld X-ray machines to health officials, including Deputy Commissioners, to strengthen TB screening and early detection, particularly in remote areas.
Addressing the gathering, Bhalla said that while Manipur’s reported TB indicators were relatively favourable, greater efforts were required to improve case detection in remote and difficult-to-reach areas. He noted that reported figures might not fully reflect the actual prevalence of the disease.
The Governor urged the Health Department and district authorities to ensure effective deployment of the portable X-ray machines in remote areas and regularly monitor their use and outcomes.
Welcoming NTPC’s nutritional support initiative, Bhalla expressed hope that the assistance could be expanded to cover more patients as additional cases are identified. He also appealed to community leaders and organisations to come forward as Nikshay Mitras and provide nutritional, emotional and social support to TB patients.
NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to supporting the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan through its CSR initiatives. He said timely screening, complete treatment, adequate nutrition and community support were important for TB elimination.
Singh also highlighted the potential of portable AI-enabled X-ray technology to expand screening and facilitate early detection in remote areas of Manipur.
Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur appreciated NTPC’s financial support for TB patients and said the partnership would strengthen the state’s TB elimination efforts. He also stressed the need to make full use of the AI-enabled portable X-ray devices, particularly in remote areas.
Commissioner (Health and Family Welfare) Sumant Singh said the initiative was aligned with the national focus on strengthening TB detection, treatment and community-level interventions. He said the ₹2.9 crore NTPC support would provide six months of nutritional assistance to around 1,800 TB patients and their families.
He added that the 30 portable handheld X-ray machines would strengthen early TB detection and called for greater community participation to address stigma and support patients during treatment.
