Meghalaya: KSU intensifies demand for removal of East Khasi Hills SP over ‘extortion’ racket

Shillong, Oct 3 (UNI) The Khasi Students' union (KSU) today intensified its protest, exerting pressure on the Meghalaya government to remove Vivek Syiem from the post of East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police over an extortion racket, allegedly operated by police personnel targeting truckers along the Shillong bypass.
During flash protest in Shillong, KSU members hung banners in several areas of the state capital, including outside the main secretariat and the office of the SP’s office to pressurize the government to given in to their demands.
“Prove that you have nothing to do with it and that you are clean. Step down as SP and allow an independent investigation,” and “Arrest and prosecute corrupt police officials”, some of the banners challenged.
One banner specifically targeted the demolition of a temporary shed at the alleged crime scene, labelling it a "destruction of evidence" and challenged Syiem’s authority to order its removal.
The banners, however, were swiftly taken off by police personnel.
Following the KSU's expose of the extortion racket targeting truckers—allegedly run by police personnel in the Mawkhanu and Thangshalai areas along the Shillong Bypass road—the police department suspended four constables and transferred the officer-in-charge of the Diengpasoh police station and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The truckers claimed that they had to shell out money ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 500 to police personnel camping in a shed along the bypass.
Syiem had acknowledged that the videos shared by the KSU were “disturbing” and that they indicated a clear possibility of police personnel collecting money on the bypass.
He had assured that appropriate departmental proceedings would be initiated against the personnel following “impartial examination”.
The KSU, however, sought an independent inquiry and removal of SP Syiem and also East Khasi Hills district Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, maintaining that junior policemen would not have dared to collect extortion money without ‘protection from the top’. UNI RRK SS
