Manipur govt to facilitate semiconductor skill training and industry placement for youth: CM Khemchand

Imphal, Sep 24 (UNI) The Government of Manipur is facilitating specialised skill training in Semiconductor Surface Mount Technology (SMT) for graduates from Minority, OBC and SC communities, with training to be conducted at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, said Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Thursday.
The initiative, taken up through the Manipur Minorities & Economic Development Society (MOBEDS), aims to equip young graduates with industry-oriented skills and facilitate employment opportunities in the growing semiconductor and electronics sector.
A total of 25 graduates, including 22 boys and three girls, have been selected from 75 applicants following a selection process. The trainees, irrespective of their graduate discipline, will undergo 15 days of residential training at IIT Madras.
The Government of Manipur will bear the expenses for training, accommodation and travel, with support from IIT Madras, Khemchand said.
A key component of the initiative is employment linkage. Following completion of the training, IIT Madras will provide placement assistance to successful trainees in various linked industries. Entry-level employment opportunities are expected to offer salaries in the range of Rs 20,000-25,000 per month.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who interacted with the selected students at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat today, said specialised technical fields such as semiconductors offer emerging opportunities for the youth.
He encouraged the trainees to make full use of the programme and acquire skills that could open new avenues for employment. He also expressed the hope that the trainees would bring back the skills and experience gained at IIT Madras and contribute to the state’s development.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Minority Affairs, OBC and SC Armstrong Pame said the SMT programme covers assembly and manufacturing processes involving electronic components and materials used in the semiconductor and electronics industries.
The programme is being conducted by IIT Madras as a skill-development initiative, with practical and industry-oriented training through its specialised facilities.
The interaction programme was held in hybrid mode, with officials and faculty members of IIT Madras joining through video conference. Padma Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, Prof. R. Sarathi, faculty members and other officials also participated virtually. UNI NS NST SAS
