Mann lays foundation stone of Rs 47.38-crore water treatment plant in Dhuri

Chandigarh, Oct 7 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a Rs 47.38-crore, 14-million-litres-per-day water treatment plant at Bardwal village in Dhuri constituency, saying the canal-water-based project would provide improved drinking water supply to around 85,000 residents while reducing dependence on groundwater.
Mann said the project would treat canal water and make it fit for drinking, addressing both present and future water requirements of Dhuri. “Through this Water Treatment Plant, canal water will be treated to provide clean, safe and quality drinking water to the people. Approximately 85,000 residents of Dhuri will benefit from improved water supply facilities,” he said.
The Chief Minister said groundwater depletion remained a serious concern and claimed his government had increased the share of canal water used for agriculture from 22 per cent to 88 per cent by laying around 14,000 km of pipelines. He also said paddy yields had increased by up to four quintals per acre in areas where canal-water availability had improved.
“Groundwater is one of our greatest natural assets, but its continuously declining level is a matter of serious concern for all of us,” Mann said. “Clean drinking water is not a luxury for any citizen; it is a basic necessity and right of everyone.”
Mann said the government intended to reduce dependence on groundwater and make greater use of surface water resources. “We do not merely make announcements on paper. We believe in completing projects on the ground in a time-bound manner. This Rs 47.38-crore project is a testimony to that commitment,” he said.
