Meghalaya: UDP expels three party legislators for merging with NPP

Shillong, Oct 19 (UNI) The United Democratic Party (UDP), a regional political party in Meghalaya, has expelled three of its legislators—Paul Lyngdoh, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Nujorki Sungoh—from the primary membership of the party, after they joined the National People's Party (NPP).
The expulsion comes after the trio submitted their merger letter to Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma on Monday.
“As evident from the local news today, it is clear that you all will be joining the National People's Party (NPP), therefore, with powers vested in me as President of the United Democratic Party, I hereby expel the three of you from the primary membership of the Party, with effect from October 19,” UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh stated in a join letter to Lyngdoh, Tongkhar and Sungoh.
The UDP, which won 12 seats in the 2023 assembly elections, has suffered its worst setback since its formation in 1997. The party has been reduced to a single-digit presence in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, with Metbah Lyngdoh being the sole remaining legislator.
Of the 12 UDP legislators, eight joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on September 23 in New Delhi and three others switched over to the NPP today.
The NPP has consolidated its dominance by securing 36 members—well past the halfway threshold of 31—while the BJP has claimed the spot of the second-largest legislative party with 10 seats, replacing the UDP.

Both the BJP and UDP are constituents of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
