Mission Samudra to become new engine of Kerala's economic growth: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 16 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Wednesday said Mission Samudra would become a new engine of economic growth by tapping the State's vast maritime potential in areas including cargo movement and tourism.
Speaking at a discussion on Mission Samudra on the first day of the three-day 'Reimagining Kerala' round-table conference here, Satheesan said the mission sought to link Kerala's maritime trade legacy, dating back 2,000 years, with emerging opportunities.
The State's 600-km coastline, two international ports, a container terminal and 18 minor ports would be interconnected to develop Kerala as an integrated port network, he said.
As part of efforts to ease traffic congestion on roads, 50 per cent of cargo movement would be shifted to waterways and coastal routes. In the first phase, the movement of hazardous materials such as oil and gas would be shifted to waterways and coastal routes, followed by other cargo in the second phase, the Chief Minister said.
He said industrial agencies had been directed to acquire the maximum possible land required for implementing the projects. The government was committed to providing necessary facilities to those interested in investing in the State.
The State Level Bankers' Committee and banks had also expressed willingness to provide loans for land acquisition and investments, Satheesan said.
Tourist terminals would be established and connected with minor ports and the 44 rivers in the State. Academic courses in maritime studies, logistics and maritime law would also be introduced, he said.
Kerala would regain its position as the country's leading seafood-exporting State, which it had held a decade ago, Satheesan said. Existing laws would be amended to promote aquaculture, he added.
The projects being implemented under Mission Samudra would be environment-friendly and would ensure employment opportunities as well as rehabilitation for coastal youth, the Chief Minister said.
He also announced that an Oceanarium and a Maritime Museum would be developed as major projects to boost tourism and economic activity in Kerala.
The latest technologies and modern models from around the world would be utilised for the projects, Satheesan said.
Ports Secretary Rathan U Kelkar, Vizhinjam Seaport International Ltd Managing Director Jeromic George, experts, representatives and officials from the sector participated in the discussion.
