Mizoram police seize narcotics worth Rs 228 crore in Saitual district

Aizawl, Sep 16 (UNI) Police in Mizoram’s Saitual district have seized narcotic drugs estimated at Rs 228.19 crore in the international market since January, with more than 250 kg of methamphetamine accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total value, officials said on Wednesday.

The seizures include 252.565 kg of methamphetamine valued at around Rs 149.63 crore and 14.663 kg of heroin estimated at more than Rs 45 crore.

Heroin was seized in 23 cases, while methamphetamine was intercepted in 12 cases during the period.
Police also seized opium fluid in 15 cases, valued at about Rs 6 crore, and morphine in five cases worth around Rs 25 lakh. Several consignments of cannabis and marijuana were also seized.

A large proportion of the seizures were made by a special team of the Saitual District Executive Force in the Kawngkualmawi area of Keifang town. The area has emerged as a key interception point for narcotics being brought into Mizoram from neighbouring Manipur.

Police said the estimated value of the seized drugs was calculated using rates quoted by the Narcotics Control Bureau.

The seizures come amid a reported shift in the routes used to traffic narcotics into Mizoram following the launch of the state government's anti-drug drive, Operation Jericho, in September last year.

Enforcement officials said traffickers and their carriers, locally known as "mules", had moved away from the traditional Champhai route after intensified enforcement. Narcotics are now increasingly being brought into Mizoram from Myanmar through Manipur and through southern parts of the state bordering Myanmar's southern Chin state.

Lawngtlai and Siaha districts have emerged as other routes of concern for enforcement agencies.

The Mizoram government has said the intensified crackdown has also pushed up the prices of narcotics, particularly heroin, methamphetamine and crystal meth, as traffickers face greater difficulty in moving supplies into the state.
